The upturn in the economy in the second half of 1983 was much stronger than anticipated in last year's forecast. Actual kWh sales in 1983 rose 3.1% over the year before, compared to our projected 1.8%. The continued vigor of the economy this year also exceeded last year's expectations. Although all areas of the economy showed strength in 1983, and continue to do so this year, the sharpest growth was registered in the housing market. The basic assumptions affecting electricity consumption for all classes of business for the long run that are used in this year's forecast remain essentially unchanged from last year's projection. Adjustments were made for the short run, however, to reflect actual 1983 data, 1984, and projections for the second half of 1984, which anticipate a slowing of economic growth. Most of the changes reflected in this year's forecast can be attributed to the strong growth in electricity usage in 1983 and 1984. This usage was spurred not only by the economy, as noted earlier, but by the weather as well, which boosted both winter and summer sales. Reprints of this report are available for $5 a copy.
