Disease syndrome of Scotch pine showing needle necrosis on Steyer No. 2 farm

Book ·
OSTI ID:6166502
The necrotic coniferous foliage collected from the Scotch Pine Christmas trees growing on the Steyer No. 2 Farm was studied with histological methods. This study revealed that the disease syndrome manifested by the various thin-walled cells of the coniferous needles was caused by phytotoxic concentrations of sulfur compounds. From numerous studies with coniferous foliage that has exhibited this disease syndrome, from control fumigation studies in the laboratory, and from several field studies in areas where only phytotoxic concentrations of sulfur dioxide were present, it can be said without equivocation that the necrosis seen on foliage from Scotch pine trees on the Steyer No. 2 Farm was caused by excessive concentrations of sulfur dioxide in the ambient air. 11 figures.
