Phytotoxicity of ozone and sulfur dioxide to laboratory fumigated scotch pine

Journal Article · · Plant Dis.; (United States)
OSTI ID:6309044
Scotch pine, Pinus sylvestris, transplants (2-1 = 2 yr in seedbed; 1 yr as transplant) were fumigated with sulfur dioxide (666 ..mu..g/m/sup 3/ (25 pphm = parts/hundred million)) and ozone (280 ..mu..g/m/sup 3/ (14 pphm) and 579 ..mu..g/m/sup 3/ (29 pphm)), separately and in combination, for an accumulated total of 10, 68, 154, and 164 hours. Observations of injury to foliage indicated severe symptoms in response to SO/sub 2/ alone, no visible response to O/sub 3/ alone, apparent antagonism between SO/sub 2/ and O/sub 3/, and marked differences in inter- and intra-tree response to SO/sub 2/.
