Rig activity doubles in the overthrust

The overthrust belt is the most significant US oil and gas play since the discovery of the Prudhoe Bay reserves. Assuming continued availability of lands, materials, supplies and people, there is unlimited growth potential in this area. The recent success of this play is mainly due to technologic improvements in seismic techniques. Higher product prices also have provided the extra incentive to look for deeper and smaller reservoirs. This belt of complex geology stretches beyond the US-Canadian border into Canada and Alaska and beyond the southern border into Mexico. The US portion alone is equal in area to that of the productive portion of the Gulf of Mexico. Rig activity along the US portion in the overthrust belt has doubled in the past 12 months. More than 140 wildcat wells have been drilled with the industry's success rate running above 15%.
