History of oil and gas exploration in the overthrust belt of Wyoming, Idaho and Utah

Conference · · Guideb. - Wyo. Geol. Assoc., Annu. Field Conf.; (United States)

Man has been utilizing oil from the overthrust belt for over a century. But only in the past few years have apparent major fields been discovered. The thrust belt is still considered very much a frontier area, and its true potential as a significant hydrocarbon resource remains controversial. The sudden rather astounding success ratio of wildcat wells in the fossil basin of Wyoming and adjacent Utah (Pineview, Ryckman Creek, Yellow Creek and the apparent Whitney Canyon discovery) has precipitated lease plays and geophysical activity unprecedented in the much maligned thrust belt, and interest has extended from the Canadian border to SW. Utah. 32 references.
