Eleven representatives of the coal industry, utilities, and coal research institutes testified for two days as part of a series of hearings on what the problems are in expanding coal use and how to resolve those problems. Reporting on their work on clean coal technologies, the witnesses were asked to address the economic and environmental advantages that new technologies will introduce, the opportunities for expediting commercialization of the technologies, and the federal role in expediting development. The witnesses described work underway on fluidized-bed combustion, magnetohydrodynamics, and integrated gasifier/combined cycle technologies. Gaseous and particulate pollutants from combustion are the major problem, although there are potential environmental problems in every stage of the coal fuel cycle. Material submitted for the record by the witnesses and others follows the testimony.
