Eight witnesses from the Department of Agriculture, Environmental Protection Agency, National Science Foundation, National Institutes of Health, Public Health Service, and the Executive Office testified at a hearing examining the costs and benefits of biotechnology advances as background for developing a sound regulatory scheme that will realize the potential of the technology while protecting public health and the environment. The hearing focused on the adequacy of existing laws and the level of scientific knowledge used as a basis for regulation. The purpose was to coordinate the regulatory environment to make it consistent while keeping the biotechnology industry competitive.
