A discussion of the Kenya Pipeline Co. Ltd.'s 448 km, 14 in. OD Mombasa-Nairobi products pipeline constructed by Nippon Kokan K.K. covers design of the system, including pump stations at four sites with a maximum 2.4 million ton/yr capacity and provision for four more, raising total capacity to 5.1 million tons/yr, offtake facilities for a lateral line to Nairobi International Airport, a terminal in Nairobi, a telemetry and telecommunications system, a computer system capable of remote control from Nairobi, and the need to maintain the static head as the pipe rises from sea level at Mombasa to 1630 m in Nairobi; construction problems, including right-of-way clearing, ditching, stringing, welding, and coating and wrapping, and river crossings, including that of the Tsavo River, which required diversion of the river into a temporary bed; cathodic protection by an impressed current system with power supplied from the pump stations, along with sacrificial magnesium anodes at railroad, road, and powerline crossings; and hydrostatic testing; and construction of the pump stations and the terminals at Nairobi and Mombasa.
