Radiotherapy of early glottic cancer. II. [Results and complications of /sup 60/co therapy]

Journal Article · · Int. J. Radiat. Oncol., Biol. Phys.; (United States)
A detailed retrospective analysis of the results and complications of treatment of early glottic cancers is presented. Two hundred and four patients treated by radiotherapy at the Antoni van Leeuwenhoek Ziekenhuis in Amsterdam are reviewed. The results are analyzed in terms of local control, cure and complication rates. These data are compared and contrasted with a similar group of patients treated at the Princess Margaret Hospital during the same time period. It is concluded that the risk of major complications in the larynx from radiotherapy rises very rapidly once the dose of 2050 ret is exceeded. The presence of diabetes and/or hypertension and the severity of acute reaction are related to the subsequent risk of major complications. The dose cure curve for early glottic cancer has been found to be flat over the dose range considered (1650 to 2050 ret).
