This paper describes the operation of rerouting a half-mile section of the trans-Alaska Oil Pipeline about 200 miles south of Prudhoe Bay. The new permanent reroute at milepost 200 replaces a section of the original 48-in. line laid in the floodplain of the Dietrich River. Alyeska found that a 275-ft. section of a 2,900-ft. buried span had settled to a maximum of 14 to 15 feet because of thawing permafrost. A temporary 30-in. bypass line was installed. Stopple devices were used to plug the line at both the north and south ends of the section to be isolated. Oil removed from the isolated section was trucked to a designated pump station and reinjected into the pipeline.
