Similar, but different, are the Kuparuk and Prudhoe oil fields. Prudhoe is the present source of oil flowing from Alaska to the lower 48 - 1.55 million bpd. By 1982, oil from the Kuparuk will be added to the Alyeska Line. The Kuparuk field lies beyond the west limits of the Prudhoe unit, approx. 26 miles from Alyeska's Pump Station One. Arco will spend $455 million to develop and produce from 30- to 50-ft thick sands. Forty wells will be directionally drilled from 5 pads on Arco's block of 20 sections in T11N, R10E, Umiat meridian. The plan is to use natural depletion and secondary recovery methods. Estimated recoverable reserves in the 100%-owned Arco leases are more than 100 million bbl. Kuparuk oil, heavier (API 22-24), colder, and with a lower gas-oil ratio than Prudhoe, will have to artifcially lifted with gas.
