Kinetic determination of osmium in complex natural and industrial products
Kinetic osmium determinations based on arsenite-periodate and arsenite-iodate indicator reactions have high sensitivity and selectivity. The determinations are unaffected by 50- and 1000-fold excesses, respectively, of ruthenium and many other elements. Since kinetic methods are used to determine osmium in dilute solutions, complex materials such as ores and industrial products must first be treated to put the osmium in an analytically suitable state. In this paper, the authors devise a method with the following steps: breakdown of a 1-g sample by fusion with sodium peroxide; separation of the osmium from accompanying elements by distilling off its tetroxide, absorbing it, and proceeding with the determination. To make the sample more representative, the authors concurrently preconcentrated a 100-g sample by fusion onto a nickel-matte collector and then followed the above procedure. The authors used acetic acid (0.1 M) and potassium chloride to absorb the distilled trace osmium tetroxide which dissolved completely in both solvents, with the catalytic activity of the resultant solutions remaining stable for 6h.
