A selective kinetic method has been developed for the determination of osmium, based on a catalytic arsenite-iodate reaction. The detection limit is 5.10/sup -7/ g/ml. The study shows that osmium can be determined over a concentration range from 5.10/sup -7/ to 5.20/sup -3/ g/ml with a sufficiently high level of accuracy. A 1000-fold excess of ruthenium or large quantities of other elements do not interfere with the determination.
