Multinucleon interactions of hadrons with nuclei and the additive quark--parton model

Data on the multiplicity of secondary charged pions produced when ..pi../sup -/ mesons with p = 40 GeV/c and protons with p = 9.9 GeV/c interact with several protons of carbon (/sup 12/C) and tantalum (/sup 181/Ta) nuclei are analyzed in terms of the principal diagrams of the additive quark--parton model. It is shown that for these interactions the contribution of quark rescattering in the nuclei and cascade processes is large and amounts to 60--70%.
