Each spectrometer uses a combined scintillation detector consisting of NaI(Tl) (with a height of 10 mm) and CsI(Tl) (with a height of 35 mm), the diameter of each scintillating crystal being 80 mm. A NaI(Tl) crystal is used as the spectrometric crystal, while the CsI(Tl) crystal is used as an active shield for the NaI(Tl) crystal, protecting it from X-rays and gamma rays from the satellite. The utilization of a combined detector made possible a considerable decrease in the background and thus a significant increase in the sensitivity of the instrument as compared with a similar spectrometer on Cosmos-428. 11 references.
