Physical properties of scintillators used in particle scintillation counters are examined and their characteristics are given. In order to locate gamma quanta, inorganic crystals are utilized, especially NaI and CsI, and Ta, Eu, and Ar are used for activation. The scintillation period in the NaI(Tl) crystals is 0.25 x 10/sup -6/ sec, the effectiveness of recording of gamma quanta equals 90% with the energy of 100 kev and 40% with the energy of 1 Mev. In order to obtain a large NaI monocrystal, two methods are used. CsI ensures great probability of photoabsorption, and in contrast to NaI it is nonhygroscopic. CsI is also a good alpha detector. Other inorganic crystals STAKI(Tl), RbI(Tl)! have a light output 5 times lower than NaI. In the alpha detectors ZnS and other organic materials or crystals are used, the scintillator being made in the shape of a thin lamina ( st run. Concent 1 ). Chemical purity is obtained by purification and polymerization methods. Inert gases can be used as scintillators for alpha -rays. Fast electrons produce light emission of scintillators and the slow ones are located as they produce alpha - and gamma - radiations; scintillators can be used as neutron detectors. Photographs of crystals and tables of characteristics are given. (TCO)
