We have investigated the main experimental characteristics (multiplicities of various types of secondary particles, correlations between them, angular distributions, and their dependence on various parameters of the primary nucleus and target nucleus) of the multiple production of particles in inelastic interactions of carbon nuclei at momentum 50 GeV/c with nuclei of nuclear emulsion. A systematic comparison is made with studies of deuteron-nucleus and ..cap alpha..-nucleus collisions at similar energies per nucleon of the incident nucleus and with calculations according to the cascade-evaporative model of nucleus-nucleus interactions. It is shown that the cascade model satisfactorily describes most of the general characteristics of multiple production in /sup 12/C-nucleus collisions, although in a number of cases a quantitative disagreement with the data is observed. An estimate is made of the cross section for diffraction dissociation of the carbon nucleus into three ..cap alpha.. particles.
