Use of oil mud clean-up fluid can improve well productivity
A new family of aqueous completion fluids has been developed and field-tested that removes damaging solids lost to formations drilled with invert emulsion or oil- based drilling mud. Several advantages are offered by these fluids over currently employed diesel or xylene treatments. They are less hazardous, less expensive, more effective, and easier to pump into deep, hot, high- pressured wells, which are normally the type drilled with invert or oil-based mud. This family of fluids, trademarked Inversol, is based on 2% KCl water-containing mutual solvent. They incorporate various strong surfactants, drilling mud peptizers, and may contain permanent organic clay stabilizers. They are clear to light yellow in color with a density of 8.44 ppg, and are not combustible. This work presents test data and field evaluations of the treating fluid system that has been designed to irreversibly reduce oil-phase mud viscosity while suspending mud solids for removal from the reservoir.
