Within the framework of the distorted-wave impulse approximation (DWIA) with the use of microscopic transition densities we calculate angular distributions of protons from the ( p, p') reaction at E/sub p/ = 160 and 201 MeV in the nuclei /sup 48/Ca, /sup 90/Zr, and /sup 208/Pb with excitation of giant M1 resonances and a number of states with anomalous parity. The main attention is paid to the study of the microscopic structure of 1/sup +/ excitations and of the contribution to the cross section from different effective interactions. We consider the problem of universality of the magnitude of the local charge with respect to the spin-isospin field e/sub q/(sigmatau) characterizing the suppression of the strength of low-energy spin-isospin transitions. The possibility of manifestation of the effects of softening of the pion mode directly in cross sections for the ( p, p') reaction at intermediate proton energies is also investigated.
