Natural Gas Pipeline Company of America (NGPLC), A MidCon subsidiary, is continuing a several year program to rehabilitate a 26-in, gas transmission line originally installed in 1953 in south Texas. Parts of the 1990 rehabilitation work included a 24.4-mi section of the 26-in. system between Robstown and Refugio, Texas. Prime contractor was H and K Construction, Inc., and construction was completed in late 1990. The rehabilitation work was done in the following steps: NGPLC pulled the section of 26-in. out of service and purged gas from the line. Backfill was stripped from the line, pipe was pulled from the ditch and skidded, then cut into about 3,000-ft sections. New trench, in the same ditch, was cut with wheel ditches and backhoes to give a 36-in. minimum cover. Old coal tar coating was removed with a water blast process, and old pipe inspected visually for eroded sections. These sections, if any, were cut out and new line pipe was then welded into the section. Line travel shot blast machine used to clean pipe to a near-bright finish. Plural component thin film coating was applied by line travel equipment. Line was cradled into the new ditch, backfilled, hydrostatic-tested, dried then put back into service.
