Sandblasting offers dual values for pipe line rehabilitation

Sandblasting of the interior pipe wall is coming into more frequent use in upgrading existing systems. Line rehabilitation programs can include sandblasting the exterior of the pipe over the ditch while the line remains in service, providing a clean surface on which new coating and wrapping can be applied. External over-the-ditch sandblasting of pipelines has been made economically possible with development of the Osciblaster, a self- propelled line-traveling unit. Internal sandblasting of line pipe is not new. It has been found that within a certain velocity range, when sharp sand is blown through a line, it will clean and polish the internal pipe walls to effect a higher efficiency factor. Sandblasting, either internal or external, leaves the pipe in a state highly susceptible to corrosion. It is imperative that internally cleaned pipe be tied into the system immediately afterward. On externally cleaned line, new coating and wrapping is applied closely behind the sandblast operation. Recent case history projects are described.
