Alaska disaster's instant market response: petro-politicians challenged

A force majeure defies easy analysis of its effects, which is why the phrase is built into most important contracts around the world. The disaster of the oil spill from the Exxon Valdez ship at Prince William Sound in Alaska on March 24, 1989, is a case in point. Domestically, it is the cause of front-page consumer news and a broad, heated debate among oil-industry, environmental, and political leaders. Such debate will become international in scope. This issue concentrates on the effects on the effects on the US internal market; future issues will examine policy developments as they unfold. This issue also presents the following: (1) ED refining netback data series for the US Gulf and West Coasts, Rotterdam, Singapore as of March 17, 1989; and (2) ED fuel price/tax series for countries of the Eastern Hemisphere, March 1989 edition. 9 figures, 5 tables.
