Details of the analysis of the [eta][pi][sup [minus]] system studied in the reaction [pi][sup [minus]]p[r arrow][eta][pi][sup [minus]]p at 18 hthinsp;GeV/c are given. Separate analyses for the 2[gamma] and [pi][sup +][pi][sup [minus]][pi][sup 0] decay modes of the [eta] are presented. An amplitude analysis of the data indicates the presence of interference between the a[sub 2][sup [minus]](1320) and a J[sup PC]=1[sup [minus]+] wave between 1.2 and 1.6 GeV/c[sup 2]. The phase difference between these waves shows a phase motion not attributable solely to the a[sub 2][sup [minus]](1320). The data can be fitted by interference between the a[sub 2][sup [minus]](1320) and an exotic 1[sup [minus]+] resonance with M=(1370[plus minus]16[sub [minus]30][sup +50]) hthinsp;MeV/c[sup 2] and [Gamma]=(385[plus minus]40[sub [minus]105][sup +65]) hthinsp;MeV/c[sup 2]. Our results are compared with those of other experiments. [copyright] [ital 1999] [ital The American Physical Society]
