Study of {eta}{pi}{sup {minus}} and {pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup {minus}}{pi}{sup {minus}} systems in {pi}{sup {minus}}p interactions at 18thinspGeV/c

The exclusive reactions {pi}{sup {minus}}p{r_arrow}{eta}{pi}{sup {minus}}p and {pi}{sup {minus}}p{r_arrow}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup {minus}}{pi}{sup {minus}}p at 18thinspGeV/c have been studied at the MultiParticle Spectrometer at Brookhaven National Laboratory. Partial wave analyses have been performed on the 47,200 {eta}{pi}{sup {minus}}p events and 250,000 {pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup {minus}}{pi}{sup {minus}}p events. In {eta}{pi}{sup {minus}} a J{sup PC}=1{sup {minus}+} exotic state of mass (1370{plus_minus}16{sub {minus}30}{sup +50})thinspMeV/c{sup 2} and width (385{plus_minus}40{sub {minus}105}{sup +65}thinspMeV/c{sup 2}) is seen to interfere with the a{sub 2}(1320) with resonance-like phase motion, while in {pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup {minus}}{pi}{sup {minus}} a J{sup PC}=1{sup {minus}+} exotic wave is observed with resonance-like behavior at a mass of (1533{plus_minus}8thinspMeV/c{sup 2}) and width (158{plus_minus}20thinspMeV/c{sup 2}). {copyright} {ital 1998 American Institute of Physics.}
