Apparatus for operating wireline tools in wellbores

This patent describes a system for positioning a tool in a wellbore and for moving the tool longitudinally in the wellbore to a predetermined position; an elongated, coilable tube adapted to be inserted in the wellbore, the tube being engageable with means for traversing the tube into and out of the wellbore; electrical cable means extending through the tube from substantially one end thereof to the opposite end of the tube; connector means at one end of the tube for connecting the cable means to electrical conductor means; and a connector assembly disposed at the opposite end of the tube which is insertable in the wellbore for connecting a downhole tool to the tube, the connector assembly including means forming a coupling including a sub connected to the opposite end of the tube and means engageable with the sub to permit angular displacement and limited lateral excursion of the tool with respect to the tube to minimize lateral pressure on the tool in the wellbore while precluding substantial rotation of the tool relative to the tube.
