Two-stage thickening of flotation tailings in radial thickeners
Recently the flotation process has been used not only as a method of cleaning slurries, but also as an effective means of regenerating wash water. The use of direct-flow water-slurry systems, sending the maximum quantity of the water passing through the screens of the dewatering devices to flotation, permitted a significant improvement in the technical and economic operating indices of washeries. However, experience has shown that these systems have certain negative aspects, one of which is a high degree of dilution (liquid/solid ratio by weight) of the flotation tailings permitted at some washeries: liquid/solid = 50/80. One-stage thickening of this product in radial thickeners usually does not provide a cake with solids content of over 100 to 120 g/l, leading to significant loss of water by the washery. At the same time, the necessity for reducing the regenerated water cycle time and finding methods of thorough dewatering of flotation tailings (centrifugal flocculation, filtration under pressure) requires a more concentrated cake. Results are given from laboratory and industrial tests of two-stage thickening of flotation tailings by using surfactant flocculants in radial thickeners. It is shown to be possible to increase the solids content in the slurry discharged from the washery from 15 to 20 to 250 to 300 g/l.
