This article describes experience in the use of centrifugal flocculation with new polymeric flocculants and of filter presses for treatment of slurry-flotation wastes. The development of a closed aqueous-slurry cycle in which flotation wastes are processed remains a pressing problem at coal washeries. A single-stage aqueous-slurry system has been in operation at the Saranskaya Washery since 1974. Introduction of this unit made it possible to eliminate the practice of discharging energy-containing slurries into outdoor settling tanks; the resultant annual savings has been about 400 thousand rubles. Further improvement of the aqueous-slurry system is proceeding in the direction of closing the cycle within the washery building, dewatering the flotation tailings so that they become transportable. Centrifugal-flocculation units are recommended by the IOTT for dewatering of flotation tailings. A necessary condition for the use of filter presses to dewater flotation tailings at Soviet coal washeries is the design and introduction of large-scale automated and mechanized units with vertical plates and high throughput levels. An experimental model of a fully automated diaphragm-type frame filter press (FRAM-200) with vertical plates and individual continuous filter-cloth belts has been built and installed at the Sukhodol'skaya Washery. An experimental model of a segmental diaphragmless filter press (FK-600) with a filtration surface of 600 m/sup 2/ is under development. Improvement of centrifugal-flocculation units and introduction of Soviet-produced, large-diameter filter presses will afford a real opportunity for production of transportable flotation wastes and slurries and for closing of the aqueous-slurry systems at coal washeries.
