A quantitative evaluation is given of the swelling of clay particles in an aqueous medium. It is shown that the degree of thickening of flotation tailings depends on their proportional content of clay particles, the solids content in the original suspension and the method of forming the cake. A method is proposed for evaluation of the efficiency of mechanical methods of dewatering flotation tailings.
