Successful afforestation work in Hebei

This article reports on how a mechanized tree farm in a Chinese province successfully completed its afforestation work after 20 years. A combination of man-, horse- and machinepower was employed on the lower plain consisting of rugged mountains. Mechanized afforestation was used on mountain slopes and hills of 15/sup 0/ or less. On steep gradients, where animals and machinery could not operate, human labor was exclusively relied on for transporting nursery stock, digging holes and planting trees. More than 900,000 mu have been afforested, over 540,000 mu of forests have been preserved, and natural secondary forests have been nurtured, improved, developed and expanded to more than 300,000 mu. The farm has become one of the major commerical forests in Hebei Province, China.
