The authors present results of the direct spectrophotometric observation of HNO/sub 2/ accumulation during the alpha-radiolysis of nitric acid solutions. They obtain an equation for the rate of accumulation of nitrous acid. They investigate the effect of various factors on initial rate of formation and equilibrium concentration of nitrous acid. They propose a kinetic scheme for the process of HNO/sub 2/ formation and choose parameters for individual reactions.
