A spectrophotometric method is used to study the dependence of the radiochemical oxidation of plutonium(III) in nitric acid solutions on the nitric acid concentration (0.12-2.9 mole/liter) and on the initial plutonium concentration (1.4-10 mole/liter). Intense internal alpha-radiation with a dose strength of 3.2 Gy/sec was effected by the introduction of curium-244 into the solution. It was established that in weakly acidic solutions the oxidation of plutonium(III) proceeds only partially and is accompanied by the formation of plutonium(IV) peroxide complex. Increasing the concentration of nitric acid leads to a growth in the rate and completeness of plutonium(III) oxidation. For C/sub HNO/sub 3// > 0.5 mole/liter formation of the peroxide complex is not observed, and the oxidation process exhibits an autocatalytic character. It is shown that nitrous acid exerts a substantial influence on the kinetics of plutonium(III) oxidation. Mathematical modeling calculations based on a proposed kinetic scheme have been carried out with the help of a BESM-6 computer, and satisfactory agreement is seen between the calculated and experimental kinetic curves.
