The authors study the radiation chemical behavior of americium (VI) ions over a wide range of compositions and dose rates. They establish an empirical equation for the rate of this process. They find that the americium(VI) yield increases as the concentration of nitric acid and lithium nitrate increases. They explain this by the effect of nitrous acid, a principal product of the alpha-radiolysis of nitrate ions.
