Si sub 3 N sub 4 by the carbothermal ammonolysis of silica

Journal Article · · Advanced Ceramic Materials; (USA)
Si{sub 3}N{sub 4} powder was produced by the carbothermal ammonolysis of fumed SiO{sub 2} at 1,300{degree} to 1,400{degree}C for 6 h in a flow reactor. Powders consisting of 95% Si{sub 3}N{sub 4} with only 46% O{sub 2} were obtained and were primarily {alpha}-phase and uniform in particle shape and size (2 {mu}m). A comparison of the systems SiO{sub 2}-C-NH{sub 3} and the SiO-{sub 2}-C-N{sub 2} showed higher reaction rates when NH{sub 3} was used because of its dissociation to form active forms of hydrogen and nitrogen.
