A MRF of art
The creators of a new Materials Recovery Facility in Phoenix, Arizona, part of the city's 27th Avenue Solid Waste Management Facility, incorporated both educational and aesthetic ideas into the facility's design, which will one day include picnic areas, hiking trails, and research programs that will mine the adjacent landfill for aluminum. Operational since mid-July, the MRF comprises half of the 105,000-square-foot building, which also includes a 4,000-tpd transfer station from which trucks haul nonrecyclable trash to a landfill about 45 miles outside of Phoenix. Equipped with a double-line sorting system with Bollegraaf (Holland) machinery the MRF processes 200 tons of commercial fiber waste per 10-hour shift. Currently, it recovers old newsprint (ONP), high-grade paper, mixed waste paper, and old corrugated containers (OCC).
