All in the family at CDT

A family-owned business near Chicago opened a new materials recovery facility (MRF) in late June that processes a wide variety of materials. Despite the fact that the MRF will rely largely on old-fashioned manual sorting, it has an innovative handling system that few recycling facilities in the country have. CDT Landfill Corp. (Joliet, Ill.) began operating the facility in early June and was bringing the facility up to its full, 600-tpd capacity last month. The facility will be the second for the company, which opened a smaller, 100-tpd facility in Wilmington, ILL., five years ago. The MRF will process both municipal solid waste (MSW) and commingled recyclable materials, but on separate lines. The facility will take in a variety of recyclable materials--the usual metals, glass, paper, and plastics--and will also take in yard and wood wastes for composting. Special (nonhazardous) wastes will be sent directly to the company`s 58-acre, Subtitle D-approved landfill, known as the CDT Expansion Site, adjacent to the facility.
