Deadly vise tightens on US refiners

Crude oil price slippage of recent weeks has been exceeded by slippage in Gross Product Worth, the value of the refined barrel. Result: The spiral of operating margin deterioration of 1985 and 1986 is back - more insidious than ever. US product markets are falling, principally at spot and unbranded rack wholesale levels. This issue tracks crude oil margins and examines some elements making for a vicious circle of crude and product pricing. In the end, the refiners' quandary could translate into another 1986, with the higher-cost crude oil producers as the most serious casualties. This issue also contains the following tables: (1) weighted dollar value by product for total product barrel at several US and non-US locations; (2) ED refining netback data for the US Gulf and West Coasts, Rotterdam, and Singapore for early September 1987; and (3) ED fuel price/tax series for countries of the Western Hemisphere, September 1987 edition. 3 figures, 16 tables.
