Refining margin update: the light at the end of the tunnel

US refining margins seem now poised for gradual and sustained improvement - if product price increases continue to exceed crude oil price strengthening. Whereas 1986 margins bounced between poor to worse, fueling the debate about US dependency on imported petroleum, improved 1987 margins could comfort struggling refiners and conceivably soothe some that have been fearful of the effects of lower-priced foreign oil. This issue also contains the following: (1) ED refining netback data for the US Gulf and West Coasts, Rotterdam, and Singapore for late January 1987; and (2) ED fuel price/tax series in US dollars for countries of both the Eastern and Western Hemispheres, January 1987 editions. 3 figures, 6 tables.
