The reduction of N/sub 2/O, NO, and NO/sub 2/ by carbon monoxide on a nickelous oxide catalyst was investigated at 200 to 500/sup 0/C under pulse conditions with a vibrating fluidized bed of catalyst. With respect to their ability to undergo reduction by carbon monoxide the nitrogen oxides are arranged in the order NO/sub 2/ > N/sub 2/O > NO. The neutral state of the nickelous oxide surface is the stable state in the reaction of N/sub 2/O with CO and NO with CO, while the oxidized state is the stable state in the reaction of NO/sub 2/ with CO. The rates of the reduction of N/sub 2/O, NO, and NO/sub 2/ by carbon monoxide are independent of the CO concentration and increase as the concentration of nitrogen oxides in the pulse is increased. The reactions between N/sub 2/O and CO and NO and CO proceed primarily via an associative mechanism.
