The interaction of nitrogen oxide (N/sub 2/O, NO, and NO/sub 2/) with nickel oxide (NiO) has been studied in the temperature interval 200-600/sup 0/C. It has been shown that upon contact of N/sub 2/O or NO with reduced specimens, the formation of nitrogen proceeds as a result of a chemical reaction of oxidation of the surface by the nitrogen oxide. Among the nitrogen oxides that were investigated, only NO/sub 2/ is catalytically decomposed on the nickel oxide to N/sub 2/ and O/sub 2/.
