Crystal structure, microstructure, surface morphology, and transport properties of Er[sub 5]Ba[sub 7]Cu[sub 12]O[sub [ital y]] high-temperature-superconductor thin films

Er[sub 5]Ba[sub 7]Cu[sub 12]O[sub [ital y]] is a thin-film high-temperature superconductor (critical transition temperature, [ital T][sub [ital c]]=93 K). The crystal structure, microstructure, surface morphology, and transport properties of Er[sub 5]Ba[sub 7]Cu[sub 12]O[sub [ital y]] thin films were investigated by x-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and four-point dc-resistivity measurements under magnetic fields. Oriented Er[sub 5]Ba[sub 7]Cu[sub 12]O[sub [ital y]] thin films on cubic ZrO[sub 2](100), MgO(100), LaAlO[sub 3](100), and SrTiO[sub 3](100) substrates were prepared by molecular-beam deposition and post annealing in wet and dry O[sub 2] (BaF[sub 2] technique; annealing temperature =850--890 [degree]C). The 0.4-[mu]m Er[sub 5]Ba[sub 7]Cu[sub 12]O[sub [ital y]] thin films on cubic ZrO[sub 2](100) and MgO(100) substrates grew with mixed [ital b] and [ital c] orientations. The 0.4-[mu]m Er[sub 5]Ba[sub 7]Cu[sub 12]O[sub [ital y]] thin films on LaAlO[sub 3](100) and SrTiO[sub 3](100) substrates annealed at 850 [degree]C had [ital c]- and [ital a]-oriented grains, whereas the films annealed in the temperature range 870--890 [degree]C displayed (001) epitaxy.
