Prompt neutrino production in a beam dump experiment

The flux of prompt electron and muon neutrinos produced by 400 GeV protons on nuclear targets has been measured at FERMILAB. The ratios of prompt electron to muon neutrino events and of prompt muon neutrino to anti-neutrino events were found to be consistant with unity. Assuming that the charm production cross section varies as A zeta, it was found that zeta = .731 +/- .045. For one set of assumptions, the production cross section for charmed D mesons was found to be 118 +/- 54 ..mu..b.
