Prompt electron neutrino to muon neutrino ratio from 400 GeV protons on tungsten

Thesis/Dissertation ·
OSTI ID:5072512
A prompt neutrino beam dump experiment has been performed at Fermilab, where an 80 ton lead-scintillator calorimeter with a drift chamber-toriod muon spectrometer was used. The number of electron neutrino charge current events is obtained in two ways. First by subtraction of the muon neutrino neutral current events from the total number of muon-less events. Second by direct identification of electron neutrino events in the calorimeter (Y shift). The ..nu../sub e//..nu../sub ..mu../ ratio is equal to 1.34 +/- 0.26 +/- 0.22 (subtraction method), and 1.01 +/- 0.18 +/- 0.20 (Y shift method, statistical and systematic errors) for energies above 20 GeV/c. This number is consistent with D meson production in the tungsten target and electron muon universitality.
