Prompt production of muon neutrinos and muon antineutrinos in proton-tungsten collisions

An experiment was performed in a 400 GeV/c proton beam at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory to study the production of neutrinos from the decay of short-lived particles in tungsten targets. The apparatus used to detect the neutrinos was a lead/liquid scintillator calorimeter with Proportional Wire Chambers for particle tracking followed by a muon spectrometer to measure the momentum of the muons created in interactions of neutrinos in the calorimeter. In particlar the ratio of antineutrino to neutrino flux was measured to be 1.4 +/- .4. The result is not significantly different from 1.0 to show any evidence of the production of any other charmed particles than D-mesons.
