This report describes research intended to study the growth of crystals of gadolinium scandium gallium garnet (Gd/sub 3/Sc/sub 2/Ga/sub 3/O/sub 12/) doped with neodymium and chromium. A specific goal of this project was to grow crystals 2.5 inches (6.4 cm) in diameter by 10 inches (25.4 cm) long with chromium and neodymium doping levels of 2 x 10/sup 20/ ions/cc each. The growth of undoped crystals of gadolinium scandium gallium garnet (GSGG) was studied as well in order to investigate the general engineering issues associated with the growth of GSGG crystals of this size.
