The primary objective was to scale up the growth of chromium and neodymium doped gadolinium scandium gallium garnet (Cr:Nd:GSGG) crystals to 5.1 inches (13 cm) diameter by 8 inches (20 cm) in length. From such a crystal could be fabricated as many as five laser slabs 1 x 10 x 20 cm.
