Out of the large reserves of W. Canadian tar sands deposits, 35 billion bbl of oil can be recovered economically by open pit mining, dredging, hot water extraction, and fuel substitution. On heavy oil reserves in Canada, application of economically proven tertiary recovery could permit the production of 2.5 billion bbl of oil from the Lloydminster Fields and 3.7 billion bbl from the Cold Lake-Primrose heavy oil fields. The total Canadian recoverable reserve contained in tar sands and heavy oil is rounded off to a conservative number of 40 billion bbl. Exploitation of this reserve would result in synthetic crude being available - enough to cover a hypothetical Canadian demand of 2 million bpd for the next 50 yr. Some 85% of the total recoverable reserve would come from tar sands.
