Tar sand mining--start of new era

This discussion of the Athabasca tar sand deposit covers the origin and occurrence of tar sands, the GCOS mining project, tar sand extraction procedures, the use of tar sand bitumen as a source of fuel, the occurrence of metals in the tar sand deposits, time scheduling of the project, and the executives and personnel involved. A history of the tar sands beginning with its use by Indians to waterproof canoes in 1778 to the current developments is also considered. The Great Canadian Oil Sands project is a 45,000-bpd mining and processing operation. This project demonstrates the industry's technical and economic ability of recovering the 300 billion bbl of recoverable oil in the Athabasca sands.
