Tar sand and heavy oil resources and technology

Conference ·
OSTI ID:7123620
Tar-sand resources in the U.S. are not as concentrated as the Canadian Athabasca deposits, but they are significant; the amount recoverable is estimated to be 25 to 35 billion barrels. Some of the characteristics of tar sands and heavy oil sands and their occurrence are discussed. The single large-scale production of bitumen from tar sands is the operation of Great Canadian Oil Shale Ltd. in Alberta (45,000 barrels daily). Other production over the world is also considered briefly. Plans and research activities are described. (DLC)
