The Science and Technology Committee had five days of hearings on the major issues that surround the decision to build a large synthetic fuels production capability in this country. The technologies available for such an effort were examined, the economic and environmental constraints that must be integrated into the management of the program were examined, and the various incentives and organizational structures which the administration and others had proposed were also examined. The issue is one of utilizing American industry to develop technologies previously undemonstrated in this country which will meet overriding national goals. Coal synfuels, shale and biomass were mentioned. (DP)
