The experiments were carried out using a flow-type glow discharge system. Strength E of the longitudinal electric field was measured by a compensation technique using heated electrostatic probes. Tests were carried out on argon and neon and their binary mixtures with methane, hexane, and some cycloalkanes, and benzene. The ionization potentials of the hydrocarbons are tabulated. The energies (in eV) of the metastable atoms (A) of argon and neon are listed. Upon addition to the argon of hydrocarbons with IP less than the energy of the argon MA, E falls significantly and the concentration rises correspondingly. The same effect is observed when methane is added to neon. Upon addition of methane to argon (IP greater than the energy of the MA) E increases and the concentration falls correspondingly. The experimental results support the conclusions concerning the changes in the parameters of a glow discharge plasma in inert gases containing small amounts of polyatomic gases.
